If only "Bowling Green" were here! July 25, 2005 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
My first Vinyl album was the very best of the Everly Bros, purchased in 1966. I still have that album, but this collection has a better display of their resume`, hitting all of their great songs except "Claudette" and "Bowling Green".There is another collection entitled " Definitive Everly Bros", which is a more complete Anthology of 50 songs(Import from England),but at a greater expense. This is a very worthy addition to any collector of 50`s and 60`s Country-Rock, and "Rock a billy"sound.Steve D
Every major hit by a major influence in rock. March 18, 2005 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
It was always hard to get the entire hits by the Everly Brothers on one CD because their 50's records were on Cadence then they switched to Warner Bros. in 1960. This one has them all! They were born to sing. Their harmonies are a blueprint for the early Beatles sound and countless other groups to follow. They had something like 15 Top Ten hits and they're all here. The only slight omission is "Claudette" which was the flip side to "All I Have to do is Dream". But that's a minor quibble when you realize that this is the finest greatest hits collection by the Everlys ever. The sound is excellent! Every hit on this CD is a favorite.
These guys rock! March 16, 2005 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I know I remember listening to Don and Phil the first time around. Most kids will pass on these guys as really old, but most of the seminal rockers list the Everly Brothers as prime influences. Great music sung by two guys that had it all together in the 50's and 60's.
Early Everlys February 13, 2005 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
Don and Phil were huge stars in the late 50s and their influence on subsequent music was great. But many people think their best work came later. My personal all-time favorite is Bowling Green, released in 1967. This particular compilation covers the period 1957 to 1962, when they were at the peak of their popularity. It includes their biggest hits from that time. Whether it is their best work or not, it is what they will be remembered for. It is great to have the original recordings, so that you can hear them just as were. The price is good too, so if you want to know what else the Teddy Boys and Bobby Soxers were listening to besides Elvis, this is the album for you.
Great songs at a fair price, forty years and more ago... December 22, 2004 5 out of 17 found this review helpful
I was finishing up seventh grade when the Everlys hit the charts with "Bye Bye Love" which made me a perfect target fan. I bought all their singles for three or four years, then got their album with "Cathy's Clown" on it. This Rhino collection has their biggest hits, as originally released. While only 38 minutes long, it's enough, for the price. Back in the days, I liked their uptempo songs best, especially "Problems" and "Wake Up, Little Susie" but listening to this CD tonight makes it clear that their enduring performances come on the ballads, especially "All I Have to Do is Dream", which is perfect, and "Let It Be Me." Phil and Don offered rock/pop infused with traditional country roots, which later became a common blend, but was rare in their heyday. Lovely voices, good melodies, nice guitar licks here and there make this CD a nostalgic treat. My son is a DJ on a radio station with an "adult contempory format" but I don't hear him play anything as musical and universal as these hits. The late '50's pre-Beatle charts may have been dominated by simple and short songs, but my gosh, the artists were The Everlys, Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly and so many others whose contributions are still enjoyable decades later. I don't think many of the artists on today's chart will be loved and missed 40 years ahead.
